"The possibility of tailoring one's car to suit personal tastes is becoming increasingly important to car buyers today. R-design has been developed for buyers who want a refined and sporty look for their cars," says Gerry Keaney, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Sales and Customer Service at Volvo Cars.

The R-design package for the Volvo XC90 is an extension of the XC90 Sport version that was introduced in the end of 2006. New R-design features are the optional 20-inch wheels, the dual exhaust pipes, a unique skid-plate and the R-design badges in the grille, on the steering wheel and on the seats as well as rear-view mirror caps in silk matt finish.

Features remaining from the XC90 Sport version are:

* Sport chassis
* Details and trim in a silk-matt finish rather than the standard chrome.
* Unique sill mouldings in brushed stainless steel.
* Sport steering wheel and gear selector of perforated leather and sports seats with additional lateral cushioning to support the driver, even in faster cornering.
* Seats with a combination of two different grades of leather, enhanced by décor piping in different colour shades.
* Instrument dials with metal chronograph watch-style faces and a shimmering blue lustre.
* Sport carpets with accent-coloured décor piping.

2008 Volvo C30 R Design

2008 Volvo C30 R Design

To accentuate the sporty nature and create a sleeker appearance, the vehicle is not fitted with roof rails - although they will be available as an option for customers who need them.

R-design for C30, S40 and V50
The R-design package for the Volvo C30, S40 and V50 includes a choice between 10 exterior colours and the R-design badge in the grille is accompanied by a range of specially designed exterior and interior details.

Exterior features include a silk matt-finish grille, colour co-ordinated bumpers and lower side mouldings, rear or roof spoiler, silk matt-finish door mirror caps and five-spoke aluminium wheels (17 inches, 18 inches available as option). There is also a deco trim on the trunk lid of the S40 and tailgate on the V50.

Contrasting seats
Inside the car there are seats in off-black Flex-Tec with the seat cushion and backrest in contrasting cream-coloured leather. The R-design logo embossed on the backrest and the contrasting stitching reinforce the seats' sporty appearance.

Other R-design interior details include the leather-trim steering wheel with its R-design logo, the unique combi instrument, aluminium pedals, specially designed aluminium centre stack and door inlays, gear selector with aluminium inlay and tufted dark sport floor mats with contrasting light leather piping.

A selection of R-design features will also be available as accessories.

Emotional and extrovert
"R-design is entirely in line with the accelerated focus on making our cars more extrovert and emotional. It gives the buyers the opportunity to spice up the already distinct personality of these car models," says Steve Mattin, Senior Vice President and Design Director at Volvo Cars.

Volvo ReCharge Concept Plug-in Hybrid with Battery-only Range of 60 Milescombustion diesel engine for backup power

combustion diesel engine for backup power

Jan 13, 2008 -- The Volvo ReCharge Concept is a plug-in hybrid with individual electric wheel motors and batteries that can be recharged via a regular electrical outlet for maximum environmental benefit.

Volvo ReCharge Concept

Volvo ReCharge Concept

Recharging allows the car to be driven about 60 miles (100 km) on battery power alone before the car's four-cylinder diesel engine is needed to power the car and recharge the battery.

"A certain proportion of electrical vehicles will be necessary to meet the CO2 emission demands of the future. Since the Volvo ReCharge Concept combines an excellent battery range with a backup combustion engine, it is a very interesting concept," says Magnus Jonsson, Senior Vice President Research and Development at Volvo Cars.
He adds, "The ReCharge Concept that we presented in Frankfurt a few months ago had a Bioethanol engine. The concept offers unprecedented flexibility to meet future challenges. By showing the car with a diesel engine, we demonstrate that the combustion engine for the generator can be matched to the preferences of each market. The diesel engine is one of the most energy efficient alternative available today ".

The ReCharge Concept has been developed at the Volvo Monitoring and Concept Center (VMCC), the Volvo Car Corporation's think-tank in Camarillo, California.

"This is a ground-breaking innovation for sustainable transportation. A person driving less than 60 miles a day will rarely need to visit a filling station. In the USA, this may apply to almost 80 percent of drivers," says Magnus Jonsson.

Thanks to the excellent electrical range from a fuel consumption angle, the Volvo ReCharge Concept is exceptionally kind to the car owner's wallet.

When driving on electric power only, operating costs are expected to be about 80 percent lower than that of a comparable petrol-powered car.

"This plug-in hybrid car, when used as intended, should have about 66 percent lower emissions of carbon dioxide compared with the best hybrid cars available on the market today. Emissions may be even lower if most of the electricity in intended markets comes from CO2-friendly sources such as biogas, hydropower and nuclear power," says Magnus Jonsson.

An electric motor at each wheel
The Volvo ReCharge Concept shown in Detroit combines a number of the latest technological innovations into a so-called "series hybrid" where there is no mechanical connection between the engine and the wheels.

* The battery pack integrated into the luggage compartment uses lithium-polymer battery technology. The batteries are intended to have a useful life beyond that of the car itself.
* Four electric motors, one at each wheel, provide independent traction power.
* Four-cylinder 1.6-litre turbo diesel engine (109 hp) drives an advanced generator that efficiently powers the wheel motors when the battery is depleted.

Electric car with a combustion engine as backup
In principle, the Volvo ReCharge Concept is a battery electric car with an efficient generator, an Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), that steps in when battery charge becomes insufficient for adequate driving performance. The APU is designed to distribute electrical power to the individual motors at each wheel.

Since the combustion engine only powers the APU, it can operate in an optimal fashion, both for regulated emissions and CO2.

The APU is sufficiently powerful to supply an entire villa with electricity. For example it could with minor modifications in principle give the car owner an electricity generator right at his front door in the event of a power failure.

The driver can choose the power source
The combustion engine starts up automatically when 70 percent of the battery power has been used up. However, the driver also has the option of controlling the four-cylinder diesel engine manually via a button in the instrument panel.

This allows the driver to start the engine earlier in order to maximize battery charge, for instance when out on the highway in order to save battery capacity for driving through the next town.

"There is a considerable difference between our plug-in hybrid and today's hybrids. Today's hybrids use the battery only for short periods to assist the combustion engine. Our solution is designed for most people to run on electric power all the time, while providing the extra security that comes with having a combustion engine as a secondary source of electrical power," says Ichiro Sugioka, project manager for the Volvo ReCharge Concept. He adds: "What is more, our C30 with plug-in hybrid technology retains its lively and sporty driving properties. Acceleration from 0-60 mph takes 9 seconds and top speed is 100 mph."

Specially developed electric motors
The central electrical components in the Volvo ReCharge Concept demonstrator - the generator for the APU and the wheel motors - were developed together with British electromagnetic specialists PML Flightlink.

With an individual electric motor at each wheel, weight distribution as well as mechanical efficiency and traction are maximized. The friction in mechanical gears is eliminated. Since the car does not have the transmission found in ordinary cars, there is no need for a gear lever.

To help maximize the environmental benefits, the Volvo ReCharge Concept has high-efficiency tyres developed by Michelin. They are specially designed to accommodate the wheel motors.

Further more, the car has All Wheel Drive in the truest sense of the term. Power to each wheel is controlled individually.

The energy that is generated during braking is transmitted to the battery pack. When the system is ultimately developed, traditional wheel brakes will be completely replaced by electrical brakes with minimal energy wasted through friction.

To ensure reliable operation of the powertrain and braking system, driver inputs are fed into a quadruple-redundant electronic control system.

Ecologically sound solution for commuters
The Volvo ReCharge Concept is best suited to car drivers who cover moderate distances every day. For example, a commuter who has less than 60 miles to drive between home and workplace can cover the entire round trip on electric power alone, making the car a Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) for most everyday driving.

Even drivers who cover more than the battery-only range will benefit from the ReCharge Concept. For a 100 mile drive with full batteries, the first 60 miles will be with no fuel consumption and the remaining 40 miles will be at 60 mpg. No more than 0.67 gallons of fuel is needed to go 100 miles, which is equivalent to 150 mpg.

"The only requirement is that the car owner has access to electrical outlets at convenient places, such as at home or at the workplace. A full recharge takes 3 hours. However, even a one-hour quick charge should provide enough charge to drive about 30 miles," says Magnus Jonsson

2008 Volvo C70 Caresto Edition

(from Volvo Press Release) The Caresto V8 Speedster brings its posh new C70 cousin along to SEMA. The Caresto V8 Speedster makes a comeback at the 2007 SEMA Show in Las Vegas - accompanied by its posh cousin, the stunning Volvo C70 Caresto Edition.

2008 Volvo C70 Caresto Edition-12008 Volvo C70 Caresto Edition-22008 Volvo C70 Caresto Edition-3"The Speedster is a dream car that few people can afford, while the new C70 is the affordable distant relative. Two very different cars, but put them next to each other and you see that they dropped from the same family-tree," says specialist car builder and customizer Leif Tufvesson.

Leif Tufvesson is one of Sweden's most skilled specialist car builders and customizers. Many of his cars have received widespread international acclaim. He is the man who built the Caresto T6 Roadster and V8 Speedsters, shown by Volvo at the 2005 and 2006 SEMA Shows, respectively, in Las Vegas. And now Leif is back again in Vegas with the V8 Speedster - plus a refined version of the new C70 convertible.

Inspired by the Speedster, Leif has put his own personal touch to Volvo's hardtop convertible with a new front and rear, a new interior and a beautiful two-tone blue paint job.

Leif used a BSR PPC tuning system to give the five-cylinder turbo engine a hefty vitamin injection. Power is up from 220 hp to 278 hp and torque has increased from 320 Nm to a massive 441 Nm. The inlet pipes are made of polished aluminum and the engine cover is made of carbon fiber. Leif also used an Optiflow sport air filter. It took Leif less than two years to build the V8 Speedster.

2008 Volvo S60 Review

Introduction
A midsize entry-level luxury sedan, the 2008 Volvo S60 stands apart from its rivals in many ways. Whereas most of the cars in this segment are powered by normally aspirated V6 engines, the S60 offers turbocharged five-cylinders instead. Styling is also left of center. Even as it enters its eighth year of this model cycle, the S60 still sports a distinctive Scandinavian flavor. The cabin is more functional than flashy, but you'd be hard-pressed to find fault with its solid ergonomics and comfortable, orthopedically correct seats. Where the S60 falls short is in performance -- the Swedish sedan's handling dynamics are a bit dull compared to newer rivals -- and in the backseat, where the S60 has less real-world legroom than Volvo's compact S40.

2008 Volvo S60 2008 Volvo S60 -22008 Volvo S60 -3As the S60 relies upon a turbocharged inline-5 for power, its acceleration can feel a little sluggish compared to competitors like the Acura TL, Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Infiniti G35 and Lexus ES and IS sedans. All those rivals offer the broader power deliver of a larger-displacement six-cylinder engine. And although the S60 rides smoothly, it's not as composed over bumps as its competition. Though likely satisfying to own thanks to its comfort, safety and Scandinavian personality, we suggest taking a look at newer, better-performing sedans populating this price range before closing a deal on this aging Volvo.

Powertrains and Performance
The S60 2.5T has a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder rated for 208 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed automatic transmission is standard with this engine, and it routes power either to the front wheels or all four on the all-wheel-drive (2.5T AWD) model.

The S60 T5 has a slightly smaller 2.4-liter inline-5 but uses a higher-boost turbocharger, helping it produce 257 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The T5 is front-wheel-drive only and comes with a five-speed automatic with a manual-shift mode.

The all-new Volvo XC70 on display at ispo Sport & Style

The all-new Volvo XC70 on display at ispo Sport & StyleVolvo Cars is showing the all-new Volvo XC70 at the ispo Sport & Style trade show in Munich, 8-10 July.

This is quite a natural place to be, as the all wheel drive Volvo XC70 is all about adventure and an active life. Something it has in common with the near 30,000 visitors to the show.

Or as Lex Kerssemakers, SVP Brand, Business and Product Strategy puts it: "The new Volvo XC70 has been developed for people who want to realise their dreams. It has the right attitude,
capacity, and equipment for enjoyable drives to and from adventure."

Volvos presence at the ispo shows is growing. At the winter ispo, Volvo Cars together with ispo have organised the Volvo Sports Design Forum and the Volvo Sports Design Award since 2003, where young and coming sports designers get to show their creativity. This year, the theme was personalisation, and one of the winners of the award was the Swiss bicycle expert BCM.

The winning bike, a Pro Machine SLC01, is on display in the Volvo stand. Look at the roof of the XC70, where the bike is easily mounted, as the custom-made bike frame weighs less than one kilogram.

"I like this bike because it is so easy to personalise" says Jonathan Disley, Studio Chief Designer at Volvo Car Corporation, who was a member of the jury in the 2007 Sports Design Award.

Together with Volvo Cars' core values safety, quality and environmental care comes the brand value modern Scandinavian design.

"We strive to show our cars and our way of thinking to a design interested audience", says Jonathan Disley. "In the last years, we have been active in the Milan furniture show, at the fashion weeks in Paris and Moscow and of course, at the ispo Sports Design in Europe and China.

"We know that a lot of our customers never go to auto shows, so we come to where the customers gather."

This has a double benefit. Volvo Cars gets to meet new customers, and Volvo's designers, get instant inspiration. They pride themselves in not getting all their inspiration from the automotive world, but also look at fashion, contemporary furniture, shoes and sports design amongst other things.

"I simply thrive when I can look at great design from a totally different industry and get enthusiastic over a line here or a detail there", says Jonathan Disley.

Given that it takes a number of years to develop a new car, the task to be modern is slightly more complicated than for products with a shorter development cycle. Also, a car model has to be timeless enough to last some 15 to 20 years, without the second or third hand owners feeling that is is outdated.

"We have no crystal ball, but work with the big design influences rather than the day-to-day fashion. Luckily, modern Scandinavian design has a certain timelessness built in, says Jonathan Disley interior designer of the Volvo XC70. "I get a lot of my inspiration from nature, and luckily, nature never goes out of style."

Other cars on display at ispovision are:

* The all-new Volvo V70, that in a contemporary fashion builds on Volvos history of great estates.
* The Volvo C30, a cool hatchback that is inspired by board sports. Don't miss the surf pattern in brushed aluminium on the floating centre stack inside the car.
* The CamoCar, a Volvo C30 is built by a German Volvo dealer and painted in a trendy camouflage pattern. The car is on display in the Design Tunnel together with other exclusive brands.

First Drive: 2008 Volvo XC70

There's a well-known saying that involves beauty, eyes and beholders. Normally this is a backhanded compliment. Rest assured we're not suggesting the 2008 Volvo XC70 looks like it wandered into the Ugly Forest and ricocheted off a few trees. On the contrary, it's actually quite handsome.

We're talking about inner beauty, the kind your mother wants you to see in others. Several manufacturers have built reputations on driving dynamics and feature content. But that's flashy beauty. Volvos are better known for safety and their pragmatic appeal, which isn't nearly as sexy unless you're into Swedish homemakers.

The XC70's modus operandi has always been to offer enough visual braggadocio over the straitlaced V70 to catch the wandering eye of consumers in the market for an all-weather, all-terrain SUV, only one that's as safe and practical as only a Volvo can be. Volvo has stuck to the playbook with the 2008 XC70. It's the innocuous, clean-cut do-gooder from next door.

Does This Make Me Look Fat?

We sampled the Volvo V70 and XC70 in Cologne, Germany, and both cars were in Euro-spec flavor. Volvo tells us that the U.S.-bound model won't include some of the European goodies like the active dampers, a diesel or the turbocharged version of the inline-6 gasoline-fueled engine. We do know that the XC70 reaches the U.S. in late fall of this year, a few months ahead of its V70 sibling, and pricing will be announced in early September.

Borrowing heavily from the recently revised S80 sedan, the conventional V70 and the outdoorsy, flannel shirt-wearing XC70 have been designed and engineered to be dedicated wagons, not sedans in disguise. Those fetishists steeped in Volvo's model nomenclature already knew this, but they might not know that the wagon twins ride on a new platform for 2008. It's 4.2 inches longer and 1.7 inches taller, and it rides on a 2-inch-longer wheelbase, resulting in increased passenger space and two additional cubic feet of cargo volume. There are consequences, though, as lots more steel for additional crash protection adds more than 400 pounds to the XC70's curb weight.

Opens Up Like a Centerfold

In the rear, large "Volvo" lettering suggests a prouder character for the new XC70, while taillamps now integrated into the liftgate contribute to a larger, more accessible opening into the loading area. The floor of the cargo area itself incorporates a system of handy, movable tie-down hooks that lie flush with the floor when not in use, plus there's a large lockable storage compartment.

A new interior offers color combinations not available on the V70 and maintains Volvo's waterfall-style center stack, now a trademark design cue for Volvo. The seats are exceptionally plush, if not the last word in lateral support, and are just the ticket for hours-long driving stints. The rear seat is a 40/20/40-folding affair, and in a world's first (Volvo says), the options list includes two-stage booster seats that are integrated into the two outer rear seats.

Familiar yet fresh, the revamped exterior styling continues to reflect the outdoorsy character of previous XC70s. A reduction in the amount of pavement-gray plastic bodywork adds more class, and incremental increases in the crossover's approach, departure and breakover angles improve its go-anywhere driving utility.

It Always Wears Protection

Safety systems are comprehensive. Volvo packs the XC70 with airbags galore, second-generation anti-whiplash head restraints, adaptive cruise control, active headlights, blind-spot vehicle detection and a collision-warning system that flashes lights, sounds an alarm and preloads the brakes for the impending doom. We found that the collision-warning system is overly sensitive in its default mode, Chicken Little-ing during common traffic maneuvers. Fortunately, the system has three driver-selectable levels of sensitivity.

Steering effort, of all things, also can be adjusted by the driver, though it's still too light for us even in its heaviest setting. An ongoing dialogue between the steering and the driver's fingertips does not appear to have been a priority here. Nevertheless, this is at least consistent with the dynamics of the rest of the XC70. Even with the adjustable Euro dampers turned up to their most aggressive setting, the ride is rubbery rather than harsh.

Wearing a Bigger Personality

The XC70 headed Stateside will be equipped with the corporate 3.2-liter inline-6 and six-speed automatic transmission found in the S80 (and the Land Rover LR2, actually). Rated at 235 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 236 pound-feet of torque at 3,200 rpm, it produces 27-hp more than last year's turbocharged inline-5 and propels the XC70 to 62 mph in a claimed 8.6 seconds. It's a nice engine, but we can think of other straight-sixes with not only more power but also more personality.

The XC70 has enough all-terrain capability to get to a ski resort or your summer cabin. The Haldex all-wheel-drive system sends 95 percent of engine torque to the front wheels in normal driving. If the front tires lose traction, up to 65 percent of engine power can be transferred to the rear wheels. A Land Rover-style hill descent control function has been added, which manipulates the throttle and brakes to limit speed down steep slopes to 6 mph.

This One's a Nester

It's tempting to dismiss the Volvo XC70 as nothing more than a jacked-up V70 with taller, knobbier tires, a kind of station wagon for those who have been enticed by the rough-and-tough SUV persona. There are more than shades of truth to this. Mechanical differences between the V70 and XC70 are practically nonexistent, and half of all XC70s worldwide have been sold in the image-conscious U.S. market.

In reality, however, the 2008 Volvo XC70 offers as much SUV-ness as almost anybody needs, and you don't have to live with all the compromises of an SUV, like too much weight, too little maneuverability and poor fuel economy. Such is the inner beauty of wagons.

Volvo Rolls Out "Sports-Inspired" R-design

The official word has come down about Volvo's new R-design lineup, a subject of much speculation recently. Using words like "refined" and "sports-inspired," Volvo said the factory options package — which is largely cosmetic — will be available on the Volvo C30, S40 and V50 in Europe this fall.

volvo s40 r-designvolvo s40 r-design 2volvo s40 r-design 3The R-design package apparently is not intended as a replacement for Volvo's high-performance R-series cars that the company is phasing out of production. Volvo explained that R-design "replaces and enhances" Volvo's current sport trim levels. R-design is available on Sport and SE Sport models and on all engines in the C30, S40 and V50 lineup. The Sport with R-design range starts at the equivalent of about $33,250 for a Volvo C30 1.6 Sport.

R-design includes exterior upgrades such as a satin matte-finish grille, color-coordinated bumpers and lower side moldings, rear or roof spoiler, satin matte-finish side mirrors and five-spoke aluminum wheels in 17- or 18-inch sizes. In the cabin, upgrades include off-black seats with contrasting cream-colored leather, a leather-trimmed steering wheel with R-design logo, aluminum pedals, aluminum center stack and door inlays, and tufted dark sport floor mats.

There are no major suspension modifications or powertrain upgrades. It is uncertain whether R-design will be available in North America.

Volvo XC60 coming in 2008

volvo xc60 coming in 2008

Volvo has announced that the company’s next model will be a production versio of the XC60 concept unveiled last January at theDetroit auto show. The production model will be presented in 2008 at DEtroit Motor Show.

Development of the XC60 has taken precedence over the companion S60 sedan, a spokesman says, so that Volvo can field a competitor to the BMW X3, the Audi Q5, and the Acura RDX in the important U.S. market. A new S60 will not go on sale until late 2008 at the earliest.

Volvo's Online Global Hunt for Sunken Treasure Begins

$50,000 in Gold and Key to New Volvo XC90 - Launches May 4

Volvo XC90 Hunt
Somewhere on the ocean floor sits this treasure chest full of $50,000 in pirate gold and a key to a new Volvo. In it's promotion with Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Volvo is launching a global treasure hunt. The Hunt begins May 4 and people around the world can join in the search for Volvo's treasure by visiting volvocars.us/thehunt. (PRNewsFoto/Volvo Cars of North America)

Volvo Car Corporation calls all pirates, rogues and scallywags to join The Hunt! It's time to stop speculating and start searching as Volvo launches its worldwide hunt for real-life sunken treasure, May 4.

Volvo literally has gone overboard in the second year of its promotion of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise, and has sunk a chest filled with $50,000 worth of gold doubloons plus the key to a brand new Volvo XC90 to the ocean depths, "Somewhere in the World." Anyone hardy enough to try and find it can take part in the online treasure hunt, which starts simultaneously in 22 markets, May 4 and ends with a global online 'head to head' June 2.

To join The Hunt, participants 18 and older must visit a Volvo retailer to pick up a special pirate chart then register at volvocars.us/thehunt any time between May 4 and May 29. Winners will only be eligible if they can produce the original pirate chart upon conclusion of The Hunt.

Once registered online, hunters set sail on their virtual high seas adventure and move on, receiving clues, as they solve a series of challenging and fun online puzzles. People can join The Hunt at any time through May 29, and can catch up with other participants if they correctly answer the puzzles posted online. As the contest progresses, the puzzles will become increasingly harder to solve. On June 2, the first person from each of the 22 participating markets to finish the online hunt will compete against one another in one final exciting online challenge.

The first of those 22 individuals to solve the final puzzle will be named the winner and will receive a trip to the burial location to retrieve the chest filled with $50,000 in pirate gold and a key to a new Volvo XC90.

"Last summer, we held a treasure hunt to find a buried Volvo XC90 V8 to tie in with Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and were blown away by the success -- more than 100,000 participants from around the world joined in," said Linda Gangeri, national advertising manager for Volvo Cars of North America. "This year, with more countries, more booty and all the early interest, we're really excited to 'set sail.' So, come join The Hunt!"

In addition to the United States, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand and the United Kingdom are participating in The Hunt.

Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End opens in U.S. theaters May 25.

Participants in The Hunt are encouraged to visit http://thehunt07.spaces.live.com/ , Volvo's treasure hunt blog and message board, to learn more and discuss the Hunt's developments.
