BMW product head says M division would like to develop own car

Inside Line reports that BMW's M division wants to play with the other kids and develop its own car, but it's got to wait on parent BMW to say Alles klar. This isn't new; they've been public about the desire for at least two years. The holdup, naturally, is that bean-and-spreadsheet wielding boogeyman named The Business Case: any in-house M offering has to feed the profit motive before getting the okay.

Sure, Audi has its R8, but that was made easier because of the Lamborghini link. The real template for this is Mercedes-Benz's AMG, which created the SLS on its own, and on its own chassis. The sales success of that car must surely have the folks at M anxious to fabricate a proper challenger.

When we talked to former M Division head Dr. Kay Segler, he spoke about pushing the 1 Series M through without dilution in spite of frequent reservations about its business case. We haven't heard the same talk yet from the department's current head, so, using a different template, it could be time for M engineers to start turning wrenches in their spare time: the IS-F began as an after-hours project, and in effect so did the Pagani Zonda.

BMW planning M5 with diesel, all-wheel drive?

It was not so long that a BMW with four-wheel drive - or really, anything other than the rear-wheel drive - would have seemed downright apocryphal. But these days the Bavarian car manufacturer offers traction on a growing variety of vehicles ... including the X5 M and X6 M crossovers. But an M5? If you think shudder, you can stop reading here, because the rumor is that BMW is not only the intention to invest an additional wave in the M5, but give him - gasp! - A diesel engine.

The rumors were apparently signed by an official document that triggered a particular model includes M550dX. The first letter and number, which we all know and love. The 50 refers to a new turbo diesel inline six-cylinder triple-set would be presented at the upcoming IAA in Frankfurt. The D, of course, refers to diesel fuel will burn it, and X all-wheel drive.

Although most M cars these days have simple names like M3 and M5, the fans will note that one of the first products of the division of the M535i of 1979, which came even before the first M5 in 1984. BMW may be on returning to this nomenclature for its first diesel engine, four-wheel drive sedan in the planning? We have to wait and see.

2011 BMW i8 Concept

I8 The concept combines the advantages of two different drive systems. As a plug-in hybrid will be benefited by an electric motor and an engine for maximum efficiency with a maximum dynamic range. At the front, the electric motor taken by the BMW Concept i3 and modified for use in the process of the BMW Concept Makes Hybrid i8 164 kW/220 hp, while developed three-cylinder turbo gasoline engine to 300 Nm (221 lb .- ft.) of torque drives the rear axle. Together, the two drive units move the vehicle a top speed of 250 kph (155 mph). Since the electric motor, the gasoline 1.5-liter three-cylinder was developed entirely in-house by the BMW Group and is on the cutting edge of technology in the design of conventional engines. Acceleration from 0 to 100 kmh (62 mph) in less than five seconds with a consumption in the European cycle of less than three liters per 100 kilometers (about 94 mpg imp) combined figures are currently on the ability of a vehicle driven by an internal combustion engine comparable performance. After loading pattern and the type of route, it is even possible to improve these figures.

The hybrid concept means that the BMW Concept i8 can run purely electrically. The energy that lends installed by the application system design battery between the front and rear axle modules for the electric motor on the front axle of the BMW Concept i8 delivered an all-electric range of about 35 kilometers (20 miles). The battery can be recharged in two hours in a standard outlet.

Over 11 minutes of BMW 1 Series M Coupe and E30 M3 hotness

The beauty of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe isn’t that the bean-counters let their best performance engineers have at the smallest car in the range. The real beauty is that the car goes back to the very roots of the M division, before the M3 went all V8 on us and took a hefty weight penalty in the process. To illustrate the point, BMW took the new coupe out to the track, and brought along its spiritual

Paris 2010 : BMW X3 is new yet familiar

BMW has whisked the sheets off its 2011 X3, and the second-generation crossover looks suspiciously like its predecessor. Beyond a seemingly endless parade of spy shots over the last couple of years, that’s predictable, as the Spartanburg-built X3 has been a considerable sales success for the German automaker.
While the sheetmetal stays largely the same, the lineup receives new engines and an eight-speed automatic gearbox that’s set to spread like kudzu throughout the automaker’s offerings. The X3 also becomes the first model in BMW’s growing X franchise to adopt electric power steering (the automaker’s controversial variable sports steering rack is optional), as well as optional Damper Control and Dynamic Drive Control (as seen on its range of sedans and sports cars).
In addition to the new sheetmetal, BMW promises added rear seat room, addressing one of the vehicle’s key shortcomings for the North American market.

Power will come from BMW’s Twinpower Turbo (Bimmerese for twin-scroll turbo) inline six-cylinder engine that gives the XDrive35i model 306 brake horsepower at 5,800 rpm with max torque of 295 pound-feet of torque at just 1,300 rpm. That’s good enough for a 0-62 mph time of just 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 152 mph, though it’s not clear if that figure will be governed when it reaches us Yanks. An entry-level xDrive28i model will also receive I-6 power, with 240 hp and 230 pound-feet of torque. Naturally, diesel mills will also be available in other areas of the globe, but as of yet, BMW officials haven’t committed to bringing an oil burner to the States. The gas model, however, should be in showrooms before year’s end.
Check out our gallery of live shots below, and hop the jump for the official press release.

2012 BMW 1 Series M Coupe gets early reveal

BMW hasn’t done the best job of keeping its 2012 1 Series M Coupe a secret. The hot new two-door isn’t scheduled to make its public debut until the Detroit Auto Show next month, but we’ve already seen dozens ofteaser images and videos. Heck, we’ve even driven a prototype.
Now, BMW has released video of the production-ready 1M with all of its swirly paper removed. Its bulgy, brash front end and wider stance certainly look the part of a serious baby brother to the M3, and while official numbers have yet to be confirmed, we’re indeed looking forward to flogging all 340-ish horsepower via a standard six-speed manual transmission.

Great stuff from the Packard Auto Museum courtesy of Ted Guthrie.

Here's Bruce, with a German-made Horex moped, which he just unearthed. The little putter features zero miles, having never been fueled. Bruce himself is well-known for his restroration work on Indians and numerous other brands, as well as his extensive collection of BMW's and other German bikes.

This sculture, which sits in the lobby of the museum, not only shows the design of Packard automobiles' famous hood ornament, but also lists some of the manufacturer's innovations in the auto industry.

Here's a couple of real oldies. Just visible to the left is one of the first Packard automobiles ever produced. It runs - regularly.

Check out that gorgeous Indian sidecar rig. To the right is one of the Packard family's personal cars, dating to the 30's, plus two 50's-era concept cars in the back.

Another fabulous Indian. Look closely and you can see that the pinstriping and the tank graphic are all hand-painted. Big Packard limo in the back.

Check out these two Ariels. Square Four in the front, and a twin behind it. Fabulous restos.

Cool, Maico streetbike from the 50's. Get a load of all the interesting features. Leading-link forks, all-enclosed bodywork, gorgeous paint & graphics, crankcase induction, big, comfy seat, bar-end turn signals. Also, how 'bout the chicken-coop-find BMW R25 behind and to the left?

There is much more to see at the Packard museum, plus they are preparing to open a huge addition. Note that the motorcycle displays run from January - April, each year. For more information, go to: http://packardmuseum.org
